For all the years I’ve lived in NYC, I’ve never been to Governors Island and so it was part of my to-do list to head out there with the boys to see what it was all about.
In order to get to the island there was a quick 10 minute Ferry ride for $2 round trip that served up some great views. They leave every 1/2 our from Brooklyn Bridge Park, Manhattan and the East River up until 5:30PM on the weekends.
I wanted to go this specific weekend for the annual art show called the Figment Project
I wasn’t sure what to expect but there were tanners, picnic goers, live music and food trucks. What I loved about the island was the energy. You know there is a special place in my heart for the creatives so they were all there. However there were no shortages of families, young couples and people from all walks of life just coming to hang out on one island.
The island was full of vibrant color, it made me feel happy and even some people Noah took some time out to meditate on the lawn.
They had fairies and belly dancers, a lil something for everyone!
They even had these beautiful colonials on the island, some we were allowed to go in and others were locked up. I so badly wanted to go into these to see how I would design it but of course this one was locked up.
The houses we were allowed to go into had themes with light shows, we made shadows, really cool ones might I add, Noah was working on his album cover.
Lastly, we were given costumes, they were all free under the condition that we wore them throughout the island.
I put on the witch hat fitting and Noah chose an arrow that went “through” his head.
Overall we had a great time, It didn’t take much time to get there and everything but food and the ferry were free. We definitely will be going back soon, next time with a picnic basket and suntan lotion.
Have you ever been to Governor’s Island?

Man. I always wondered/wanted to know what goes on over there. It’s soooo mysterious. It’s almost like everything you here about it you have to take with a grain of salt. How did they name it? Is it private or government owned? I worked at the Statue of Liberty and my curiousity woud always get the best of me when it came to this place. Nice article.
